Short answer. FRP angle (L-section) is used for frames, braces, edge trims and supports where steel angle would rust or conduct. It is lighter but less stiff than steel angle, so check deflection and connections. Order the size, leg thickness and resin from the environment.

| Question | Answer for FRP angle |
|---|---|
| Where used | Support frames, cable-tray and pipe supports, braces, edge trim, handrail brackets, equipment frames |
| Versus steel angle | No rust, non-conductive, light; lower stiffness and no welding |
| Versus aluminium angle | No corrosion in chemicals, insulating; less stiff per weight (see FRP vs metal tube) |
| Sizing | Leg lengths and thickness from load and deflection; supplier’s table |
| Connections | Bolted or bonded; edge distance and washers per supplier |
| Resin | From the environment: resin guide |
What to give the manufacturer
- Leg sizes, thickness and length, with tolerances.
- Loads and the connection type.
- Environment and fire class.
- Colour and finish; hole patterns if needed.
Choosing an angle supplier
Check that the supplier controls the die, can supply test data for the exact grade, and offers cutting and drilling. See how to choose an FRP manufacturer.
Cutting, drilling and connections
- Cut and drill with carbide tools; peck-drill to avoid delamination; seal the cut edges.
- Typical guidance for pultruded profiles is an edge distance of about 1.5–2 bolt diameters and a bolt spacing of about 4 diameters, but follow the supplier’s rules for your section.
- Use stainless-steel or FRP fasteners, flat washers, and do not over-tighten.
- Do not weld; use bolts and structural adhesive.
Sizing steps
- Find the load and span for the member.
- Check deflection with the section’s I and E from the supplier.
- Check the connection capacity, which often governs.
- Check resin and fire class for the environment.
