Short answer. A copper-core fibreglass rod has a fibreglass outer layer for strength and insulation around a copper conductor. It is used for lightning-rod masts, antennas and other parts that need a conductor inside a light, weatherproof rod. Specify the rod diameter, copper size, length and the electrical role of the copper.

| Use | Why a copper core | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning rods and air terminals | Conductor inside a non-rusting, light mast | Rod length, diameter, copper cross-section, mounting; follow the lightning-protection standard |
| Antennas (vehicle, radio) | Conducting element inside a flexible protective rod | Length, frequency, flex and connector |
| Flagpole and mast rods | Strength with a conductor for lights or grounding | Diameter, wall, finish |
| Signage, guardrail and wind-turbine parts | Light, weatherproof, conductor where needed | Loads and environment |
Design points
- The fibreglass supplies stiffness and strength; the copper supplies conductivity only: size it for the current it must carry.
- Pultrusion gives a uniform section; check that the copper is centred and fully bonded.
- For lightning protection, follow the standard used on the project for air terminals and down conductors.
Plain rods and their sizes: solid vs hollow fiberglass rods. Custom diameters: what we need to quote.
Electrical and lightning-protection points
- The copper core carries current; size it for the lightning or signal current and connect it to the down conductor or cable with proper clamps.
- Lightning protection follows standards such as IEC/EN 62305 or NFPA 780: the air-terminal height, spacing and conductor sizes come from them, not from the rod alone.
- For antennas, the length and the conductor define the radio performance.
- The fibreglass insulates the conductor from the support; check the end terminations for corrosion and water ingress.
- Ask for the copper diameter, the bond between core and fibreglass, and the mechanical rating.
Frequently asked questions
Is a copper-core rod stronger than a plain rod?
Strength comes from the fibreglass; the copper adds conductivity and some weight.
Can the rod be cut to length?
Yes, but sealing the cut ends keeps water from entering the copper and fibreglass.
