Fiberglass (FRP) Pipe: Composition, Manufacturing, and Limitations

Fiberglass FRP pipe

Fiberglass (FRP) pipe is a composite pipe built from a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers. The matrix can use different resins — thermosetting polyester, epoxy, phenolic resin, among others — and the reinforcing fibers are usually glass, though other fiber types are possible. Its main advantages are excellent corrosion resistance, a high strength-to-weight ratio, a low coefficient of friction, and dimensional stability, which is why it shows up across water treatment, chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, and power plant applications.

Manufacturers make fiberglass (FRP) pipe through two main methods: contact molding, which applies resin and fiber layers onto a mandrel or mold to form the pipe, and filament winding, which winds continuous resin-impregnated fiber strands around a rotating mandrel. Both methods can produce pipes across a range of diameters, wall thicknesses, and pressure ratings.

Fiberglass (FRP) pipe can be joined through adhesive bonding, mechanical coupling, flange connection, and other methods. Whatever the joint design, it needs to prevent leaks under the operating conditions and pressure, and stay compatible with both the pipe material and the service fluid.

Fiberglass (FRP) pipe does have some limitations — thermal expansion and contraction, UV degradation, and impact resistance among them — that need accounting for during design and installation. Proper supports and anchors keep stress and deformation in check, and the pipe should stay protected from direct sunlight and mechanical damage.

Fiberglass (FRP) pipe is a versatile, durable material capable of meeting the requirements of many applications and industries. Choosing the right resin, fiber, manufacturing method, and joint system lets it deliver a long-term corrosion solution with optimal performance.
