The Right Way to Cut Fiberglass Tube

Fiberglass flag pole

Cutting fiberglass tube can be done with different tools, depending on the tube’s size and shape. Here are some general steps and tips for cutting fiberglass tube:

First, protect yourself from fiberglass dust and particles, which can irritate your skin, eyes, and lungs. Wear thick work gloves, loose long-sleeved clothing, goggles, and a dust mask or respirator, and work in a large, open, well-ventilated space.

Next, mark the cutting line on the tube using a tape measure, ruler, or compass to get the length and angle right. Masking tape or painter’s tape along the cutting line helps prevent splintering and chipping.

Then choose the right tool for the job. Common options for cutting fiberglass include:

A jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade suited to fiberglass or metal — good for curved or angled cuts on thin tubes. Clamp or vise the tube in place and cut slowly and steadily along the marked line.

A circular saw with a carbide-tipped or diamond blade — good for straight cuts on thick tubes. Use a guide or fence for accuracy, cutting at moderate speed and pressure.

A router with a straight or spiral bit — good for smooth, precise cuts on any tube size. A jig or template guides the router along the marked line; use slow speed and light pressure.

A hacksaw with a fine-toothed or rod-saw blade — good for manual cuts on small tubes. A miter box or protractor helps measure the cut angle; use firm, even strokes along the marked line.

Finally, smooth the cut edges with sandpaper, a file, or a grinder to remove burrs or rough spots, and consider applying epoxy resin or gel coat to seal and protect the cut surface.
