Composite vs Concrete and Timber Railway Sleepers

Short answer. Composite sleepers do not rot or rust, are lighter than concrete and can be non-conductive and quieter. They are less stiff than concrete, so track design, ballast and fastening must be checked, and they cost more at purchase. Compare them over the track’s life cycle.

Railway sleepers carry rail loads into the ballast and keep the track gauge. Concrete is the common mainline choice; timber is traditional; composite (glass-fibre reinforced polymer, often with a resin or recycled-plastic matrix) is used where rot, chemicals, weight or electrical isolation matter, such as bridges, level crossings, tunnels and turnouts.

Composite sleeper Concrete sleeper Timber sleeper
Rot and corrosion None; no rebar to corrode Rebar and cracking over time Rots, splits
Weight Light; easier to handle Heavy Medium
Stiffness Lower; check track support design High Medium
Electrical isolation Insulating Needs insulating pads Moderate
Vibration and noise Good damping Rigid; track padding used Good
Special track (bridges, switches) Cut and drilled to length; useful for turnouts Custom casting needed Cut to size
Initial cost Higher Medium Low

Where composite sleepers fit

  • bridges and viaducts, where weight and replacement access matter;
  • tunnels and corrosive or coastal locations;
  • turnouts and special track that need cut-to-size sleepers;
  • tracks with signalling circuits that need electrical isolation.

What to check

  1. Compliance with the operator’s or national standard for sleepers, and field trial history.
  2. Spring rate and track stiffness, and fastener hold-down and pull-out values.
  3. Life-cycle cost over the planned life, including replacement and track possession time (see life-cycle cost).
  4. End-of-life options for the material.

Composite sleepers are specialised products and the properties vary widely by maker; ask for test data on the exact product. Related: composite sleepers in landscaping walls.
